Stop Solar Projects
in Rush Township
Friends and Neighbors:
Our goal is to form a community action group to oppose and protest the proposed Woodstock Solar Farm. Woodstock Solar has been designated as a Public Service Utility by Champaign County Common Pleas Judge Nick Selvaggio, and as a Public Service Utility, they are able to bypass all township zoning regulations and proceed to build a 40-megawatt solar farm on Burton and McCarty roads west of Woodstock.
According to the grid operator that oversees power generation in our area, there are two more projects under study. Both are additional solar facilities, and one includes a large battery system. It is likely these projects will be subject to local zoning, but it is not guaranteed.
We have no local oversight authority to stop construction of Woodstock Solar. Somebody has authority, and we need to find out who it is. Calls to government agencies by local residents individually have garnered very little interest and very few answers. We need a louder voice and that can be heard if more people, like you, take the time to get involved.
Several of the most severely impacted neighbors have spent countless hours searching for answers from the likes of the EPA, FERC, and PUCO regulators, township trustees, and our local County Prosecutor’s office, but these single voices are not being heard by our local elected officials.
Please join us at www.stopwoodstocksolar.com by signing up with your email address. By supporting our effort, we can keep you informed about the project, seek your participation in meetings with local officials and help our residents protect our community. When appropriate, we can send letters with questions and complaints as a large group with the hope that someone with proper authority will provide oversight of this project.
Here are just a few questions that need answers:
Have drainage studies been conducted?
Have setbacks from neighboring property lines been reviewed and established?
What is the impact on property values?
Has clean-up and disposal of exhausted solar panels been addressed?
What types of barriers will be constructed? Chain link fences?
What will the impact be on wildlife?
How will the Darby Watershed be impacted?
We need our elected Rush Township Trustees to listen to their constituents and support us by passing our concerns along to the Champaign County Commissioners and advocating for the protection of our community.
Please get involved. We believe we can still save the rural farming community we all love.
